Ski Resorts In Europe
I've been researching a proper European ski resort for skiing in February with the following requirements:
- Easy to get from Portugal
- Good value for money
- Infrastructure (preferable without a need to rent a car)
- Middle skill level friendly (blue/red trails)
- On-piste is preferred. Don't care about freeride or ski-touring doesn't matter
- Beautiful scenery
- High altitude enough to depend less on weather and time of season
The problem is there are 3953 ski resorts in Europe. Depending on what is counted as a resort, but anyway, the number is pretty much overwhelming,
Ski Resorts List
I've made up a list of resorts that must be a good value for money. For comparison purposes, there is a 5-day skiing budget estimation (equipment rent, food, drinks, ski passes, school). NOT INTENDED FOR BUDGET PLANNING though.

Highlights
I asked chat GPT to evaluate the resorts from the list according to my requirements and suggest the best options. Here is what I've managed to get:
If budget is the absolute priority
- Bardonecchia or Borovets/Bansko are among the cheapest on the list. Bardonecchia is often easier to access (via Turin) and has the charm of an Italian Alpine town. Borovets/Bansko will be cheaper on the ground (food, drinks, etc.) but have a longer overall journey from Portugal.
If you want a balance of cost + snow reliability + solid intermediate terrain
- Sauze d’Oulx or Pila (Italy) and Le Corbier (France) are good mid-range Alpine options.
- Baqueira Beret (Spain) or Soldeu (Andorra) for someone who prefers something closer to the Iberian Peninsula (shorter flight or drive).
If you’re happy to pay a bit more for a highly regarded resort
Recommendations
Given the preferences for moderate costs, good infrastructure, and plenty of blue/red pistes here is the shortlist:
- Soldeu (Andorra) – Large domain (Grandvalira), excellent intermediate terrain, good snow record, relatively easy from Barcelona.
- Livigno (Italy) – High altitude = good snow, lots of intermediate runs, nice town, slightly higher cost but still reasonable.
- Sauze d’Oulx or Sestriere (Italy) – Large Via Lattea ski area, good for intermediates, fairly budget-friendly, short transfers from Turin.
- Bardonecchia (Italy) – the absolute cheapest Alpine experience with fairly easy access from Turin.
- Baqueira Beret (Spain) – Great Pyrenees resort, possibly simpler travel from Portugal, good snow during the whole season, lots of intermediate slopes.
Any of the above should be a lot of fun, scenic, intermediate-friendly ski holiday without breaking the bank. If you prefer not to rent a car, look for package deals or shuttle services from nearby airports (e.g., Turin for Bardonecchia/Sauze/Sestriere, Barcelona for Soldeu/Baqueira Beret, Milan/Bergamo for Livigno).
Other Tips
- Avoid February half-term school holidays: ~10-22 of February
